So obviously a MySpace meme, and definitely written by USians. Assuming that you haven't got a MySpace, 'Tom' is the persona that they auto-ad to your friends that you can't delete. It's supposedly one of the founders, but was in reality an intern that fitted the demographic they wanted for advertising placements.

Link works, and impressive. I've tried deleting him several times now and he keeps coming back; I'll try again next time I log in (which I try to avoid unless working) - is there a specific trick or have they changed the setup (again)?

I just deleted him and he went. Tom has 185,373,183 friends and MySpace has 185,370,205 registered uses (or at least that is how many claimed to be in my extended network, which IIRC it claimed even when I had no friends). I guess there is a cache there somewhere.

Yeah, the extended network thing is bloody stupid, it claims it even if you've not got an account. Still, you can hide/amend it with CSS really easily so that's not a major issue.

Bah. I don't have a MySpace account, nor do I have a presence on Facebook (yet). So the only Toms I know are, well, the Tom commenting elsewhere on this post, and at least two others, probably more if I put my mind to it.

Anyway, MySpace is dead (http://www.skrenta.com/2007/06/are_network_effects_getting_we.html), innit?

I was saying MySpace was dead before I signed up for it; my profile is there to a) let friends find it and b) tell them to come here or another site.

But Facebook? It has massive potential for the next two years or so as a network, it's really picked up the best parts of LJ, MySpace and others. Plus the platform API means anyone can develope stuff to appear on profiles; they appear to be trying to create the one distributed 'find me' place.

I reckon in maybe three years or so we'll all just host our own profile/journal/whatever with an open networking setup, and Fb might be art of it. Myspace won't.

But Tom remains a git.

But Tom remains a git.

*cries*

I'm going to say Facebook is dead. Facebook is dead. Got there declaring it dead before the crowd, because I'm hip like that.
