Of death, I've only to report the passing of my great-uncle James Henry "Harry" Treeby. I've been at a few football games (Torquay, Plymouth) with him. My thoughts are with him and his family.
Of taxes, HMRC are being ansty about a repayment. They sent me a statement dated 9th November telling me I owed them £x. The £x was paid by direct transfer on 1st December. I got another letter from them, dated 1st December, stating that I now owed them £x+£y, and that if I didn't pay it all by 11th December, they'd take me to court?! I hope that it's just crossed wires, and that once they realise I paid them £x (where £x >> £y) they won't start getting nasty. I guess I should call them tomorrow and check they at least got the payment for £x. If they start getting at me for the £y, I'll just set up an online payment for the amount I owe them whilst I'm on the 'phone to them.
Of anything else...
I spent Tuesday evening at the NCT breast-feeding counselling session. I was one of 4 or 5 male partners who braved/were hen-pecked into going. Actually, if the Porto vs Arsenal game had been on Tuesday not Wednesday, I'd have insisted on being allowed to stay home.
I spent Wednesday evening in the company of
philipstorry at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's rooms in Farringdon. The main reason was to get my Dad a bottle of whisky for Christmas. Naturally, I had to sample many possibilities before I settled on a final choice.
I spent Thursday evening not having after-work drinks at the Bavarian Beerhouse on City Road (conveniently located next door to Moorfields Eye Hostpital, handy if you wind up getting blind drunk). It turns out we did need to book after all, and despite our protests that we'd called them twice (and got no answer), and emailed them (and got no reply), they wouldn't let us in. So we ended up at a place called Bar Music Hall in Hoxton/Clerkenwell.
I spent Friday evening recovering from all that lot.
I spent Saturday afternoon with my two sisters, my cousin, their respective partners, and my brother-in-law's brother and his wife and kids. We headed up to The Orange Tree in Totteridge for lunch, and it was very good, followed by dessert (home-made cheesecake and chocolate roll) back here.
I spent Saturday evening watching Ferris Beuller's Day Off on Film 4, because my wife insisted. I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a distinctly average film with a bunch of cultural references that I just don't get, or probably wouldn't get if I wasn't married to an American. I've come to the conclusion that I don't, in general, like American High School films, TV shows, etc, because they're a totally alien world to me. Yes, Buffy is of a similar ilk, but it also has vampires, demons, and Alyson Hannigan.
