So we get to the restaurant just before 8, only to find that they'd not recorded my booking. I could see where it had been in the book - I could just about make out pencil marks of my name and mobile number, and in red Biro was 'Bday', because I'd told them it was my birthday.

We got sat down, though, and a free drink... and a Christmas menu. Another small detail that hadn't been mentioned at the time I booked. No normal menu.

So we were shunted across the road to their sister restaurant, where we ordered off the a la carte (I had smoked salmon, Alexis had prawns in avocado, we both had duck a l'orange, then chocolate cake for dessert - mine arriving unannounced with a single candle atop and a serenade of 'Happy Birthday' from the waiting staff). However the music (string quartet, recorded) was a little
too loud, and I was distracted on the way in by the Turkish owner pointing out a chalked blue penis on the pavement outside the restaurant!

Let's just say, I won't be booking with either of those two places again in a hurry - though the food was good, the whole booking cock-up really didn't please me. Plus it was Mediterranean, not really Italian, but maybe I ought to have done a little more research rather than blindly going with my cousin's recommendation and the fact that I was in the area anyway when she made it.

All in all a very interesting birthday.

Next: Alexis meets my parents :)
