There's something about a sticker on a book that says '£1.99', especially in Borders. Likewise on a hardback book, when the sticker says '£4.99'. So I have two new books, that under normal circumstances, I wouldn't own.

The latter is The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes. It presents, in the style of Strand magazine in which the stories were first published, three collections of short stories and The Hound of the Baskervilles. The style I refer to is two columns of newsprint, with inset illustrations. I don't intend to read it much - I own a complete compendium, anyhow - just delve in now and again, just for curiosity's sake.

The former book has something of a story attached, though not to the book, but to its author, whom I have met. It is called Dice Games Explained Properly, and is by a man named Reiner Knizia.

I know Reiner Knizia best as a designer of board games. A few years ago, I went to a number of board games afternoons, but got bored with the people there, and just stopped going. However, during this period, I went to a board games con in Brighton, and it was there that I met Reiner. He was trialling a new game, a party game in which the players must pose as actors and directors and make mock-Hollywood-style movies, stage them, then hold an Oscar ceremony. He was planning on getting the game produced, and maybe it was in some form; I have to admit, I never bothered to try and find out.

I have one of his games at home - it's called Ra, and I played it with my family a couple of Christmases ago. It's a fantastic game, for 3-5 players, and it'd be great to get a party together to give it another go. As [livejournal.com profile] verlaine was suggesting a games evening at some point, I thought I'd dangle this temptingly to, well, tempt him.

Back to Borders, then... I saw the book, Dice Games Explained Properly, and that it was only £1.99, and was vaguely tempted. Of course, having picked it up, I noticed the name of the author, and that, as they say, was that. Quite when I'm going to get around to playing some proper dice games, I have no idea.
