I'm getting a 2000 Chevy Malibu.

About 90k on the clock, 2 previous owners (with the most recent one going for a couple of monstrous, but thankfully removable, auxiliary convex mirrors mounted on the wing mirrors), and hopefully good for the next year or two. Mot too bad a price either.

From what I've read, it's pretty much 50/50 on whether you get one that lasts, or one that needs constant work.

I've seen the checklist from the dealer, and the list of work they did on the car before putting it on the lot. Most of what they did was routine - brake pads, fluids, etc. There's one very small issue that may end up costing me an additional $6-800 in the future, but I'm well aware of it and it's reflected in the price I paid, and the discount I negotiated.

From what I can tell, the two previous owners were a typical "buy new every 2 years guy" and someone who kept it over 6 years. If you're having constant problems with a car, in my experience you don't keep it 6 years.

I've held on to mine going on beginning of 4 years. I keep putting off buying a new one because I paid so much. Yet, I also need to do about 4K of work on it that I've been putting off.
