On the surface, I would appear to be your average Mr Joe Public Ordinary guy. But consider the following facts!
First off - my direct brushes with 'fame':
I've been to see It's A Knockout being recorded (in Dartmouth, sometime in the 80's - Dartmouth went on to be joint winners of Jeux Sans Frontiers, so I like to think I was in there right at the beginning). I'm not sure if I got myself of telly, but I did my best by standing right at the front of the crowd. So who knows?
I've won the Herald Express General Knowledge Quiz League (in conjunction with my parents, and another guy called Neil, in the Weary Ploughman team). I got a cheap clock and my picture in the paper. Woo-hoo! We won by one point as well, so my answers mattered.
I also got my picture in the same paper (the Herald Express) when I got an offer from Cambridge University (such was the way of my school). I didn't get in. I tend to think of this as a Good Thing, but who knows?
My left shoulder was on Children In Need in 1991. The fact that I was wearing a blazer, shirt, and tie, and the people I was with were dressed as the Singing Nuns From Outer Space (hey - amateur rights for Rocky Horror were proving tricky to come by, so we had to improvise somewhat - we got 50 people at the show's one-and-only performance, though!) probably explains why no more than my left shoulder was on view.
I've appeared on 15-to-1. I didn't make the final 3, but I did get some very difficult questions.
Now some more indirect linkages:
I was on a creative writing course with Alda. She was/is an Icelandic singer/songwriter who had a couple of hits in 1998 (including one in the Top 10!), sang at Wembley Stadium before the Charity Shield kicked off, and made the obligatory appearances on Top Of The Pops.
A guy at work snogged Jade from BB3, just after the series had ended.
This same guy, who happens to be a member of a number of reasonably well-known West End establishments (no idea why or how) went to Jordan's birthday party last week. He took another couple of guys from work with him as his guests.
Another guy at work used to be the bass player in rock band The Almighty, who have had several hit albums, a slightly less successful career in the singles chart, played at Donington, and, of course, on Top Of The Pops.
A friend of mine went out on a double date with Jon from the current Big Brother, and his twin brother. She was actually on the date with his brother, not Jon, but it's close enough for me.
This very same friend is going, with her current fiance, to the BB eviction on Friday evening - where she may well get to see Jon, in the flesh, again!
Make of it what you will.
