This isn't all about bridge... it's about bad emails too!

Wednesday evening, I played in the BGB Simultaneous Pairs (a national sim pairs event, with over 100 clubs participating). A crucial bit of information is that this event runs all week, and that each day has a different set of boards allocated to it (otherwise you'd only be able to play once - a lot of people will play two or more nights). The club I was playing at (for the first time as it happens) is in south-west London, in a part of the world better known for its common and a world-renowned tennis tournament, amongst other things.

For starters, I wasn't impressed with the TD: he came up with a movement that ensured two East-West pairs sat out twice, all for the sake of avoiding a slightly longer sit-out for all but 2 East-West pairs who wouldn't have had a sit-out at all. (There are probably also implications on the number of times each board got played, which can have a certain bearing on the accuracy of the result.)

He delivered the coup-de-grace two rounds from the end - presumably when he opened up the booklets which are produced for each evening and contain commentary on all of the night's hands, and are distributed at the end of the night. It turns out that the boards we'd been playing were Thursday night's boards. (And we'd been playing badly too, which didn't help subsequent matters much.)

Remember that some people would've been planning to play again on Thursday - now they wouldn't be able to (as they'd already played most of the hands - not to mention the scoring program really getting its knickers in a twist!) My partner, Dave, had arranged to go to a private dinner party where they'd be playing - and called up the hostess at 11pm the night before telling her she'd have to try and get last-minute replacements. Neither party was particularly happy about the arrangement.

Dave emailed the club to complain about what happened, and I was copied in. He received a reply which, whilst it was perfectly sincere, contained the following features:
1. Didn't copy the original complaint in the reply.
2. Got the name of the "club" Dave was due to attend on Thursday wrong (even though it was correctly and clearly stated in his letter).
3. Had a silly animated "signature" that was basically an ad for free email (may have been tacked on by the provider, mind you).
4. Was written using Comic Sans MS.

I leave you to determine which of the above is the greater crime!
