Erk! Yesterday was a bit of a disaster. I switched on the kitchen light... and the bulb went. Along with the rest of the lights in the flat*. At 10.45pm, this isn't much fun. First things first, I switch off any sensitive electrical equipment (i.e. my computer), all light switches, and try switching the main on/off. No such luck. Then I try switching my computer back on again.

I've had this problem before; there's a little widget (for want of a better word; there's probably a proper word for it) just inside the case that is somehow linked to powering up the PC. Anyway, it has a couple of wires - one red, one black - soldered to it (so it turns out) that run from there to the motherboard. Before, all I had to do was fiddle with it a bit and the computer would power up. Not this time. Closer inspection this morning discovered that the soldering had failed completely, that the red wire and its contact point are... no longer in contact.

With Alexis's laptop away for repair (again!), this means we are currently running a ZERO COMPUTER HOUSEHOLD. (I am posting this by email from work, in case you're wondering.)

So please, have pity upon us poor souls who are going to have to resort to more traditional means of entertainment over the next couple of days: TV, DVDs, talking to each other!

Oh, and if anyone reading this is any good with a soldering iron and can pop round to us in the next couple of days (this evening would be great!) please let one of us know. Just use one of those old-fangled "SMS messages", or even older-fangled "telephone calls" to contact us, given we can't pick up emails or any other form of electronic communication, except when I'm at work.

[Note: since I first attempted to post this by email, and discovered I used the wrong password, [livejournal.com profile] papaspoof has kindly driven up from Deepest Sarf Lun'un to fix my poor 'pooter :-) Turns out the thing I thought was broken was a pointless LED, and the actual problem was "something stuck behind the reset button". Eww, belly-button-fluff-tastic!]

* The electrician who called this morning suggested that we get the flat totally re-wired, with the estimate being £2000. Raining? Pouring? Fscking monsoon season! Still, at least we have electric lighting back** - oh the joys of modern living.

** The free-standing lamps we have were still operational, of course.

When I read the phrase "soldering iron" I just know [livejournal.com profile] papaspoof would be involved somehow! Maybe you could try an evening of candlelight and conversation just for fun anyway? Hey, we could do with that in our house once in a while...

P.S. if Gavin is still there, could you ask him to pick me up from work on his way back south? Thanks.
