I went to Sainsbury's to purchase one item this evening. I bought five. There was reasoning behind each item purchased, and I shall now give you an insight into my thought proceses.

1. Baking potato.
"Why can't I get those twin packs of giant baking potatoes any more? And the regular ones are too small. Oh, hang on, that one's large enough, I guess. Might as well pick it up."

2. Milk.
"Hmm, might be a good idea to pick up some more milk, the stuff I've got didn't taste quite right this morning." (I was right, by the way - despite being well inside its use-by date, the milk in my fridge had gone off.)

3. Orange Juice.
"I always seem to run out of OJ. Might as well buy more."

4. A small tin of beans.
"I used one earlier this week. I only have one left. If I use one with the jacket potato, I won't have one left to go with the sausage and mash. Best buy another tin, then."

5. Muffins.
"This is what I actually came in for, because I'd run out."

I'm wondering, is this the sort of thing that other people go through? It's not unusual, of course, it's just that I was conscious of the fact that I was doing it at the time.

I don’t do that... but I’m the sort of person who writes a shopping list before I go.

I sometimes...

... pop into th'Asda on my way into work, to buy a mag, and a sandwhich, and ALWAYS end up spending at least 15 squid. I'll pick up something for dinner, ooh - I need some soap powder, better pick up some more dog food, ooh, that's a nice thingummyjig - I'll get that as a pressie for 'im indoors.... fatal.

Even with a list those evil people at the supermarket can throw me off target and make me spend more money than I want. I sometimes think that using my debit card all the time is not such a good idea. OK, I don't have to worry about carrying cash - but by the same token I don't physically SEE the cash leaving my purse, it's just a piece of plastic that I hand over.

May have to rethink.

Ooh, tagged over her from philips journal btw.
