Games companies would have us believe that a lot more women play video games than is realised.

GameFAQs Poll of the Day today was a simple question: "Are you male or female?"

The results so far: 93.77% male, 6.23% female.

So maybe there are more women gamers, but it would seem that most of 'em like to play fair, either that or they aren't too concerned with finding every secret package in GTA IV or getting 100% completion in Final Fantasy XII or knowing the cheat codes to unlock everything in Guitar Hero III.

Or they can't be arsed to waste time on gaming websites because they're not obsessive enough?

Self selecting sample, no validity as a polling method, etc etc etc.

Sorry but my ears and eyes tell me a different story when I'm playing Warcraft. Our guild has a pretty good mix of genders, about 70:30 I'd reckon. I think. The 25 man raid team certainly has at least 5 regular members who are female. So, you know, not shit players either.

I don't disagree that girls play games - it's just that girls maybe are more interested in having fun and playing for the sake of playing, than deciding that they really need to know the best way to complete level such-and-such with a perfect score and therefore gravitating to a site such as GameFAQs to find the answer.

Ahh yes, I see what you mean now. Yes I agree totally with that. I don't know how you'd get a good sample for asking questions like these - where do girly gamers hang out on the web? I have no idea. Most of our lot don't even post on the guild forums.
